The Alexander Technique

A brief overview:

Alexander Technique is a health education technique that teaches how coordination of body and mind can lead to dramatic improvement in health, posture and performance. It is unique in its approach to helping people. Alexander Technique is not a treatment. It teaches management of self and skills that instruct you in preventing bad habits and establishing coordinated, positive health outcomes.

Based on the discoveries of FM Alexander, the Alexander Technique teaches interdependence of the body's physical and mental and emotional systems and the importance of coordinating the use of those systems for good health and functioning.

Alexander Technique is often labeled as a posture therapy or bodywork technique, but the scope of Alexander Technique is much greater than those. The Technique is neither about maintaining set postures nor positions.

The Technique teaches people to use their mind and body together to establish a constant pattern of improvement in all endeavours. The teaching is based on years of painstaking observation and research into human behavioural responses undertaken by FM Alexander which he then distilled into an accessible, easy to learn technique.

People report -

•heightened body awareness

•greater understanding of how their body's work

•ability to recognise and reduce inappropriate tension

•a new sense of ease and grace in movements and skilled activities

•ability to manage and alleviate chronic conditions

•improved performance

Students learn to gauge how they achieve success in their lives by using reasoning, prevention of habit and a new coordination.

Alexander Technique achieves excellent results in the management of chronic health conditions, improvement of performance in sport and the arts, overcoming anxiety, posture improvement and stress management.

Alexander Technique distills the highly complex interrelationship of the human mechanisms into easy to learn steps for improvement. Many thousands of people around the world have benefited from learning Alexander Technique over the last one hundred years.
